The
39 Melachot Avot of Shabbat Wall Chart
Designed by Rafi Metz
Melacha
(lit. "work") refers to the 39 categories of activity not done on Shabbat. The 39
categories of activity that are forbidden on Shabbat are all labors
that have something in common - they are creative activities that exert
control over one's environment.
In each square, the Hebrew name of the melacha and its English translation
are printed in italics with the English words describing the d'oraysa
[from the Torah] prohibition, with a couple of the many d'rabbanan [from the
Rabbis] derivative prohibitions below in regular letters. Another section
contains a brief explanation of these distinctions, and the six categories
of criteria used in determining the status of an activity. [Melechet
Machshevet]
Another section lists the six categories of Mukzteh [items not touched
on Shabbat], and the four types of domains concerned with carrying.
There is more explanation on the chart than is listed here, but these
are complex and difficult subjects, and this chart is intended as a
study aid to be used along with your Rabbi or teacher, and
not as a comprehensive resource.
Here
is a close up of a section of the chart:
The
chart is 24" x 18" [61 x 46 cm] and is available on zazzle
for $14.95, plus shipping.
